"Yes Papa, you tell the best stories." agreed Missy Mouse.

"Hmmmm, That sounds like a good idea". Said Papa Mouse. "All right Little Mice, gather around and get comfortable. This is not going to be just another story tonight. This story really happened to your mother and I."

"Wow, really Papa?" asked Missy Mouse

"Really Mamma?" asked Marsha Mouse

"That's right little ones". Mama Mouse assured them. " It's all true. We were there when it happened. Listen closely and we'll tell you all about it."

After Mama Mouse sings the first verse of every mouse's favorite bedtime song, "Christmas Lullaby", Papa Mouse begins... Christmas play family

Close your eyes, rest for awhile,
take a journey with me.
To a cool night, scattered with starlight,
one shines brighter than all.

"A long, long, time ago, when your mother and I were very young mice, we started our first household in a lovely little home with a human, but respectable, Jewish couple."

"Weren't you afraid, Mamma?" Asked Murry Mouse

"Of course not little mousey," calmed Mama Mouse, "These were very tame humans and they left cheese for us every other day."

"Their names were Joseph and Mary," continued Papa Mouse, "but that is getting a little ahead of the story. You see, at first we lived with Mary's family, for she was not yet married to Joseph. Well, one morning after breakfast, the most amazing thing happened"...

Christmas Musical angel"Do not be afraid Mary, for you have found favor with God. You will be with child and give birth to a Son. His name will be Jesus. He will be great, and will be the son of the Most High. The Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David, and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever; His kingdom will never end."

"How will this be, since I am a virgin?" Asked Mary.

"The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most High will overshadow you, so the holy One to be born will be called the Son of God. For nothing is impossible with God."

Mary Replied, "I am the Lord's servant. May it be to me as you have said."

"How far is Bethlehem, papa?"

Father Mouse: "Very far away Missy - over 75 human miles, through winding mountain passes and hot deserts."

"Wow!" cried all the little mice.

"How did you get there?" asked Marsha.

"It must have taken all day." said Missy.

"It must have taken all year." speculated Marvin.

"No wonder you and Mommy are so old." realized Murry.

"Oh no, my little Squeakers" answered Papa Mouse. "It only took three days and we didn't even have to walk."

"That's right! confirmed Mama Mouse. "We just climbed into one of the camel's bags and rode through the hills and deserts to Bethlehem."

"Was it hard to find Bethlehem?" asked Marvin.

"It's hard to say," said Mama with a pause. "I think that we were lost several times, but Joseph kept insisting that he knew the way."

"Just like you, Papa!" said Murry

All little mice giggled.

"Why didn't you just take the freeway?" Marsha asked.

"There weren't any freeways back then, Marsha" answered Papa." In fact, they didn't even have much of a road."

Nibble Here to listen...No Road To Bethlehem

Who would have guessed that traveling could be such... work! Well it can be if you're riding on the back of a camel across scorching hot deserts and freezing cold nights! Getting there is more than half the battle!

Through the blazing sun,
and the cold, cold nights,
I will take my rest,
in your pure true light.

Past the wind blown sand,
to a distant land,
I will daily pray,
and by your side I'll stay.

keepin' cool as I can.
I'm on the no, road, to Bethlehem,
and I hope you like sand.

'tween the lofty peaks,
when your thunder speaks,
I will take Thy wing,
to cover over me.

Don't know where I'm goin',
don't know how to get there,
don't know where I'm stayin',
if I should arrive.

Don't think I can make it,
don't think I can take it,
don't know why it's so hot,
I hope I survive

Listen in on Joseph's little conversation with God...

Christmas Musical - Joseph"Lord, you know I've always trusted you. But when this whole pregnancy thing came up I told you it was a bad idea. I told you that no one would believe it, let alone understand it! But I did as you asked anyway. And then we had to travel all the way here with Mary being pregnant. Not very good timing, I might add. , And did you have a place for Mary and I and Your Son to stay?... Well?... Are you even listening?"

Joseph in Bethlehem

Where are You and why am I,
here beneath cold midnight skies?
I have searched throughout the town,
there's no shelter to be found.

I have always told my friends
how You'll save me in the end.
I've responsibilities.
Please don't let my family freeze.

And if You call me, I will come.
if You need me, I will run.
Oh I will serve You 'till die,
all I ask Lord, is tell me why?
Tell me why?

I don't really understand
why You trouble just this man.
I don't want to seem a pest,
but my family needs a rest.

Christmas no vacancy

Now I'm just hangin' by a thread,
for I've been searchin' for a bed.
Tho' my feet follow me like lead,
I will trust you 'til I'm dead.

Bethlehem playNot until after Joseph expresses his frustration, fear, and ultimately his serving faith, does God lead him to the last place he would ever wish to stay - the Bethlehem Bungalow. Here amongst the fleas and animals of a stable, Joseph and Mary take shelter for the night...

Christmas shepherds "Look how bright that star is over there on the horizon," exclaims the first shepherd. <"I have heard rumor down in the lowlands that soon something wonderful is going to happen," shares the second shepherd.

"Yes I've heard similar things. It's like there is a feeling in the air. (Pause) I have also heard that there are Wise Men passing through the villages. They say that they have seen a sign from God and that a King shall be born."

Suddenly angels appear with good news!

Do not be afraid; for behold, I brink you good news of a great joy, which will be for all people. For today in the City of David, Bethlehem, there is born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. If you go now, you will find this baby wrapped in cloths and laying in a manger.

After the shepherds recover the decide to go see this amazing event.

Hurry, Let us go the Bethlehem and see this wonderful thing that the Lord has told us!

As the shepherds run out of the light and off stage, the light remain on some very adorable little sheep, who have been grazing under the care of their shepherds...

What are you to do when you grow up, Mutton? asked d BaBa Lambkins

Hum... said Mutton, "I think that God is calling me to pasture."

Jeffy Lamb suddenly gets an inspiration and says with a superior tone: "When I grow up, I want to be a sacrifice!"

You're so idealistic, Jeffy! replies Mutton.

"What about you BaBa?" asks Jeffy Lamb.

"Ummm", says BaBa as he ponders the question. "I don't know, but my mommy says that if I eat too much, when I grow up I'll be a seat cover."

(Additional optional sheep lines in full script) The lights fad and then come up to reveal Joseph and Mary settling in to their humble accommodations...

"Mary, I'm so thankful that God has provided a place for us, I had all but given up. I do wish it was a little nicer though, for your sake," Joseph said.

"This is fine Joseph. (Picking fleas from the straw). It is warm and sheltered from the rain, and the straw will be comfortable to sleep on." (Suddenly Mary, feeling labor pain, bends over and sits - the baby is coming!)

Old owl, cuddly sheep, gather close around.
Something so wonderful must be on the way.
A low star shines brightly, reflecting off the hay.

"And that is how Christmas first happened d mousies, and how God sent his own Son to save man," Papa Mouse told all the little mice.

Marsha: "Why did Jesus have to come?"

Father: "Because God loved men so much that He sent Jesus to live with them, so He could restore the relationship men lost by their disobedience."

Missy: "How did He restore it?"

Father Mouse: "When Jesus grew up He was hated by the very people that He came to save, because He was just like God. So they nailed Him to a wooden cross and killed Him."

Marvin: "Wasn't God angry?"

Father Mouse: "Actually, it was just what needed to happen. Jesus was the only man who was without sin, so God accepted His death in place of the death of men, who have all sinned."

Mother Mouse: "But after He lay dead in the tomb three days, God raised Him up and now He is alive for evermore!"

Marsha: "What do men have to do to be saved?"

Nibble here to listen...Christmas Lullaby

"You're right", agrees Mama Mouse, "It is the best story, because it's true!" (Mother Mouse sings the first verse of Christmas Lullaby as a solo and then all of the cast joins her for the remainder of the song).

Our journey ends with all the little mouse children falling fast asleep around Mama and Papa Mouse, as all the animals, and choir sing  Christmas Lullaby. This song which was introduced at the beginning of the musical, is used here as the theme for the whole evening. Intimate, tender, and powerful is its impact on all who hear it, this wonderful song takes us back to a time when Christmas was filled with wonder, anticipation and a restful sense of peace that can only come from above.

Close your eyes, rest for awhile,
take a journey with me.
To a cool night, scattered with starlight,

As we draw near, lost is all fear,
somehow we know all our dreams can come true.
Softly praising, Wise Men raising,
Precious gifts to the one they do love.

Chorus:

Christmas lately,
means much more to me.
A little baby,
born to set us free.

In all my ways, how can I say,
that this small child has grown to be king.
Once we held him, covered and warmed him,
knowing soon that Christmas He'd bring.

Chorus:

Christmas lately,
You're much more to me.
A tiny baby,
come to set me free,
set me free

Christmas, lately, means much more to me!
